How To Speed Up Your WordPress Site Without Breaking It

Websites are a lot like cars, fantastic when they’re brand new, but require care and maintenance over time to keep them running like new. WordPress and WooCommerce sites require regular care and maintenance in order to keep them performing at their best.
When a potential customer visits a slow website it’s like visiting a restaurant where you can’t find napkins…you just lose a little bit of trust. A high performing website is seen as being more trustworthy in the eyes of customers AND those search engine crawlers.
Good news though – speeding up your WordPress site doesn’t have to be scary or complicated. Let’s walk through some proven strategies that won’t leave your site broken!

Before we dive into solutions, let’s get on the same page as to why this matters:
These are straightforward improvements that you can make (and we can help with!):
Your hosting provider is like the foundation of your house—everything else is built on top of it. Shared hosting might save you a few bucks, but it’s often the single biggest speed bottleneck.
What to do: Consider WordPress-specific hosting from reputable providers. For serious business sites, managed WordPress hosting or a good VPS will pay for itself many times over. Check out our article on our favorite hosting providers (hint, we have two favorites!):
Caching creates static versions of your dynamic WordPress pages, dramatically reducing load times for repeat visitors.
What to do: Install a reliable caching plugin like WP Rocket, W3 Total Cache, or LiteSpeed Cache. Even with default settings, you’ll likely see immediate improvements.
We’ve all been guilty of uploading massive images straight from our phones or cameras. Those 5MB images might look great, but they’re killing your load time.
What to do:
Over time, your WordPress database collects tons of unnecessary data—post revisions, trashed items, spam comments, and other random data. Do you need the data from five years ago? Probably not. It adds weight to your server space and those constant checks to the database can get tiresome.
What to do: Schedule regular database cleanups using plugins like WP-Optimize or Advanced Database Cleaner. Just remember to back up first!
We love the plugin community with WordPress and WooCommerce! Plugins can be an incredibly powerful tool in the right circumstances. The downside is that it’s almost TOO easy to download and install plugins to the site. All those plugins can weigh down the site.
What to do: Look for multiple plugins that are doing the same thing. If the plugin is outdated and rarely maintained, there’s probably a better one out there. If you’ve got a plugin where you’re only using one piece of functionality, find a smaller, lighter version to meet that need.
A CDN is like having clones of your site living around the world. It serves your content from the nearest location to your visitor, making things load faster.
What to do: Signup up with Cloudflare. They’re our favorite to work with and they have a powerful free version. Some hosts offer pieces of Cloudflare in their plan, but we still recommend having Cloudflare and whatever the host offers.
Here’s how to make these changes without breaking your site:
